What happened to the ice storm that we were supposed to get?

Actually the NWS (National Weather Service) still has us under a freezing rain advisory until 1:00pm Sunday. I think that they think it is their duty to warn the public even if there is a slight chance of ice in the forecast hence the advisory still being in place.

Understanding temperature profiles in the upper and lower parts of the atmosphere can be very complicated when you have near freezing temperatures that span more than a hundred miles of land. What we experienced is what I will call a "Swiss Cheese" theory of an ice storm. Despite what you see on weather stations on tv, there are no clearly demarcated straight "east-west" lines that define the freezing line on a map. Instead, pockets of cold air and warm air can spread ununiformly across an area. This is what I think happened south of I-70 overnight. Some people in northern counties saw ice while the next county over saw rain and the county south of them saw sleet.

For the snow lovers out there, don't worry. Winter is not over. All indications are that it will be warmer than average with rain until about January 25th. After that the pattern looks to turn to a colder one to open February. Stay positive #BOTS fans.
