Strange forecast for this evening.

A small bubble of snow is forecast for central Indiana.

Pictures of Sunday 1/29/17

Salt crews were out before sunset and over-doing it some spots.

The roads were not bad at all. This mostly amounted to a dusting or coating.

GFS weather model stands for Got it, Forgot it System.

Several previous runs of the GFS had a major snow storm over the Ohio Valley for 2/6 to 2/9, 2017 and then this morning it disappeared. This is EXACTLY why you do not trust models this far out.

We'll set hit and miss snow showers on Sunday. It shouldn't be much to worry about though. Temps are seasonal for the next few days with lows in the mid 20's and highs in the mid 30's.

There was a brief period of freezing rain and sleet in Bloomington.

This was on Thursday, 1/26/17 between 4p and 6p.

In case you didn't know NOAA has a new weather satellite called GOES-R, or, also known as the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R. You can read about that on the NOAA website.

Wednesday's high is 54 and the we temps back down into the mid 30's

Winter makes another comeback later this week. From the NWS:

.LONG TERM /Friday through Monday night/...
Issued at 252 AM EST Tue Jan 24 2017

Central Indiana will see a few upper waves drop southeast across the
area in mean western ridge and northeastern trough pattern. This
will result in slightly below seasonable weather with snow showers
or flurries from time to time. That said, moisture will be lacking
somewhat, so will not go any higher than the regional blend small
chance pops over all or parts of the forecast area Friday and Sunday
and Sunday night.

Upper ridge should allow for dry and seasonable weather next Monday.

Warmth continues until Wednesday 1/25/17

The high temperature on Wednesday 1/25 will be 51 degrees.Winter will try to make a comeback on Thursday 1/26. High temperatures on Thursday and onward will be in the mid thirties. I don't see any big snow storms on the horizon for the next seven days. February could be very interesting. Stay tuned.

10 days of warmth from here on out.

Enjoy it while you can. It's going to we warm for the next ten days. The cold air will return on January 26th.

NWS cancels freezing rain advisory for counties south of I-70.

This is a good call.

Best example of Swiss Cheese Theory

From Weather Underground's WunderMap feature:

Evidence of Swiss Cheese Theory

Take a look at the INDOT map below:

Dear #BOTS fans, Winter is not over!

The last two (bottom) images are not a forecast! I'm just suggesting that it's wrong to assume winter is over.

What happened to the ice storm that we were supposed to get?

Actually the NWS (National Weather Service) still has us under a freezing rain advisory until 1:00pm Sunday. I think that they think it is their duty to warn the public even if there is a slight chance of ice in the forecast hence the advisory still being in place.

Understanding temperature profiles in the upper and lower parts of the atmosphere can be very complicated when you have near freezing temperatures that span more than a hundred miles of land. What we experienced is what I will call a "Swiss Cheese" theory of an ice storm. Despite what you see on weather stations on tv, there are no clearly demarcated straight "east-west" lines that define the freezing line on a map. Instead, pockets of cold air and warm air can spread ununiformly across an area. This is what I think happened south of I-70 overnight. Some people in northern counties saw ice while the next county over saw rain and the county south of them saw sleet.

For the snow lovers out there, don't worry. Winter is not over. All indications are that it will be warmer than average with rain until about January 25th. After that the pattern looks to turn to a colder one to open February. Stay positive #BOTS fans.

Concerns over ice storm this weekend.

The NWS just issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Monroe County. What's interesting is that the models are indicating that warm air will win the battle and the ice will be from Indianapolis northward. I have no idea how this will turn out for us.

The line of storms has moved through.

@7:45pm 1/10/17 A line of storms is moving through north west Monroe County

Hello everyone. I 've been on vacation for a while. The current temperature in Bloomington is 55 degrees with a dewpoint of 49 degrees. It's currently raining and there's a line of storms approaching. No tornadoes are likely with this but with the high winds gusting to 50+ mph, there could be some small wind damage. Stay alert and keep your weather radio on for the next thirty minutes or so.

An ice storm is possible this weekend.

Snow or no snow? That is the question.

1/3/17 @11:00pm.

As I've said before there will be several cold air intrusions but they will be followed by warm air overrunning it. This week will be very cold. Afterwards, temperatures will return to slightly warmer than normal by next week.

There maybe some very, very, light snow (1/4/17) Wednesday night into (1/5/17) Thursday but that's about it. Some people are referring to this as the "first accumulating snow" event; and yes that is true for 2017 but we are talking about 1-2 inches and maybe 3 inches in isolated spots at most. The rest of January looks to be slightly warmer than normal but hey, the models change all the time. You never know. Three days out is best you can expect.
